5 Things Every Floral Designer Needs On A Design Day

We work our booties off as floral designers. The amount of (literal) blood, sweat and tears that goes into delivering our very best can be a lot. I don’t want to downplay how long and intense design days can be. I feel design days are so telling of the grit we have. I mean 10, 12, 14+ hours of designing is some hard work.

I’m sure you’ve heard it before about how being a floral designer seems so glamorous and serene to the average joe. Though it is both glamorous and it is serene, it’s also messy, chaotic and very busy.

Read on to learn 5 Things Every Floral Designer Needs On A Design Day!

WHAT DOES YOUR DESIGN DAY LOOK LIKE?

After we’ve done the consultation, the meetings, the proposals, the adjustments, the planning, what’s next?

Well, we begin to prepare for our clients' big day!

This process might start off with running to the flower market or waiting anxiously by the door for your flower delivery. This process might also start off with a good night's rest or 2-4 hours of sleep depending on how busy life may be for you at the moment. Whatever that process looks like for you, we hope you are equipped with what you need to get you through the day.

5 things every floral designer needs on a design day includes the following…

1. WATER

2. FLOOR MAT + COMFY SHOES

3. BREATHING SPACE

4. HELP

5. GOOD VIBES

WATER

It’s simple to remember but easy to forget. Drinking your water is crucial for success not just in designing but in your everyday life.

How often are you replenishing your body with this natural element?

If you ever experience brain fog, dry lips, bad breath (yes it happens to us all), cramps, inflammation, even constipation, oh yeah I went there, grab a glass of water. When we’re designing and creating for our clients, we need to be drinking water. If your body and mind are depleted of this crucial element, your abilities will be hindered. Take the time to drink your water, give yourself that mental clarity and stay hydrated!

FLOOR MAT + COMFY SHOES

Construction workers wear steel toe boots, doctors wear crocs, runners wear running shoes… do you see where I’m going with this? Florists need the proper shoes and protection just like any other career.

Firstly, find a floor mat to put under those feet of yours if you don’t already have one.

Anti-fatigue mats are all the rage because they are very helpful. Though they will not solve every issue, they can alleviate some future aches and pains as you stand all day long. Additionally, find shoes that are comfortable, provide support and are made for standing long hours. Help your body out and treat it right with the proper tools and protection.

BREATHING SPACE

Sometimes a girl just has to breathe. In this industry we experience unforeseen issues that may arise, we might be pressed for time or even have creators block.

Allowing yourself to have breathing space even for just a few minutes is so beneficial.

Breathing space allows you to grab a quick bite to eat, drink your water and simply take a break. I’ve experienced creators block many times and this is where frustration and even the fear of failure can begin to creep in. When I step away and take some moments to collect myself, most times I feel a lot better. Breathing space allows you to do just that, breathe. Give yourself this little bit of peace and take time to be kind to yourself and allow grace into your creative process.

HELP

If you are operating as a 1 person show, how the heck are you doing it successfully? Now we know growing a team involves growing and having a bigger budget. We get that 100%. But when you have learned how to price and calculate correctly, it shouldn’t be all too difficult to get the help you need.

Having help on your design day will allow you the time to hone in on your zone of genius.

When you focus on your zone of genius other tasks can easily be delegated. Also, who wants to be the only one scrubbing buckets? Not me!

GOOD VIBES

It’s all about the vibes. Part of having a successful design day revolves around creating good vibes.

It’s helpful to start off with a fresh space that is clean and clutter free.

Now I know we can’t always be organized but try to design in a space that is not suffocating. Maybe light a candle, listen to your favorite music, brew your favorite tea/coffees, maybe even pour yourself a nice glass of wine. Similar to understanding our ideal clients, we need to understand our ideal environments that help us thrive. Getting the vibes right is where the magic happens!
